FAQs
Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is the more popular and frequently visited destination due to its higher number of habituated gorilla families.
Yes. A gorilla trekking permit is required for every visitor. It is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and costs USD 800 per person (as of 2024). It is advisable to book your permit at least 3–6 months in advance due to limited availability.
The minimum age is 15 years. This is to ensure the safety of both the visitors and the gorillas, and to avoid behavioral disruptions in the gorilla groups.
Gorilla trekking can be moderately to highly strenuous. The trek involves hiking through thick forests, steep hills, and sometimes wet or slippery trails. Good physical fitness is recommended, but porters are available to help carry backpacks and provide support.
The dry seasons (June to August and December to February) are the best times to go trekking. During these months, the trails are more accessible, and sightings are still very reliable.
A trek can last anywhere from 1 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family you are tracking. Once you locate the gorillas, you are allowed one hour to observe and photograph them.
